Why linear feet?

Footing subs bill by the linear foot because the work scales with length, not width: laying out, pinning, forming, and pouring 300 feet of footing is the same walk whether the footing is 18 or 24 inches wide. How do you calculate linear feet of footing?
Measure the length of every footing run on the foundation plan — the outer perimeter plus each interior foundation wall — and add them together. Linear feet is just total length: a 40 foot wall is 40 linear feet regardless of how wide or deep the footing is.
How many linear feet of footing does a house have?
A typical detached house runs 250-350 linear feet of footing; townhouse units run less, large customs more. The total is the outer perimeter plus interior foundation-wall runs.
How do footing contractors charge per linear foot?
Labor-only footing subs commonly bill total linear feet times a flat rate, with a higher rate when rebar is placed and a flat fee per interior support pad. Rates vary by market; the structure — LF x rate + pads x flat fee — is the near-universal convention.
Do pads count toward linear feet?
No. Interior support pads are isolated square footings counted as units and billed at a flat rate per pad, separate from the linear-foot total.
